Naturally occurring alcohol sugars like xylitol shouldn't be confused with synthetic sweeteners such as aspartame, saccharine and sucralose. Synthetic sweeteners are not broken down by the body in the same way as sugars. Alcohol sugars have calories, where as synthetic sweeteners have few to no calories. Neither type, however, promotes tooth decay.
