Burien dentist Dr. Alan Cooper and his staff are committed to staying up to date on all the latest and greatest ways to improve your oral health. We recommend kids and adults chew gum or eat candy made with a sweetner called Xylitol. This natural sweetner has been shown to fight cavities and gum disease. NITROUS OXIDE SEDATION DENTISTRY
We offer nitrous oxide for those patients who request it. Nitrous oxide helps ease the anxiety of the dental visit and is proven to aid in pain reduction. It can also lessen the amount of local anesthetic you may need for a given procedure. Levels can be easily adjusted for the best possible effect for each individual patient.
When properly administered, nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, is a very safe, effective way to relieve anxiety and discomfort that may accompany dental work. Studies show that a moderate level of nitrous oxide (laughing gas) can be as effective as 15 mg of morphine. Many often say that they cannot remember feeling much at all after treatment.
The effects of laughing gas generally begin to work very quickly, helping you to feel sedate and comfortable. You recover completely and quickly after breathing oxygen for a few minutes afterwards. The effects you felt while breathing laughing gas do not linger; you leave the office without side effects.
What Does it Cost? (Here's a hint - there is no additional fee)
A recent professional survey of dentists found that 73% charge a fee of up $200 for this valuable service. Your comfort is our priority. As such, Dr. Cooper chooses to offer nitrous oxide AT NO CHARGE.
Are There Reasons I Shouldn't Use Laughing Gas?
While few, there are some reasons why you shouldn't use nitrous oxide, including:
- pregnancy
- respiratory infections
- COPD
- middle ear infections
- current or recovering drug addiction
- recent eye surgery.
Are There Side Effects?
For a few of us, nitrous oxide may cause nausea, dizziness. Usually, once the gas has been turned off, within 5 minutes the feeling tends to go away.
